Aemilia Opulenta: il Cinema Ritrovato

If you love cinema, you do not want to miss our tour of Emilia that will introduce you not only to its architectural and artistic treasures and tasty local gastronomic delights; in order to turn your holiday into a unique experience we will focus also on: movie locations of the most famous films that were shot between Bologna, Ferrara and Modena; the world of photography and film making in this part of Italy. And all this during the “Il Cinema Ritrovato Film Festival”, a real paradise for film lovers - coming from all over the world - that transforms Bologna into a magical place where you can rediscover the classics of cinema history and enjoy spectacular evening screenings on one of Europe's largest screens in the beautiful frame of Piazza Maggiore. Day 1 - Departure

Thursday the 22th June 2017 - Departure to Italy from your country of origin. Meals on board, night flight (if flying from overeseas). Any international city of departure available. Please contact us for your fligth quotation with your favourite airline.

Day 2 - Arrival in Bologna

Friday the 23rd of June 2017 - Arrive in Bologna, capital of Emilia, where your MovieTravel Angel meets you at the airport; private transfer to your hotel & assistance with check-in. Welcome drink, dinner & time to relax or sleep over the jet lag (for guests arriving from overeas).

Day 3 - Bologna

Saturday the 24th of June 2017 - Bologna: after breakfast we visit the Centro Storico (Old town centre), Basilica di Santo Stefano, Due Torri, and the Quadrilatero the historical town centre and Quadrilatero. We enjoy a typical lunch in a specially selected osteria. We get familiar with the Cineteca di Bologna, all festival venues  and the Cinema Ritrovato programme. We relax with a bolognese style apericena before the opening of the Festival in Piazza Maggiore with the screening of Jean Vigo masterpiece'L'Atalante'.

Day 4 - Rocchetta Mattei

Sunday the 25th of June 2017 - we leave early with private transfer to Rocchetta Mattei (an hour's drive from Bologna) followed by the fascinating Museo dei Tarocchi (a very special Tarot Museum!). The amazing panorama of the Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa are the setting of our gourmet lunch at Fienile Fluò. In the afternoon* we visit the Pinacoteca in Bologna and in the evening we are ready to enjoy another amazing open air film.

Day 5 - San Luca & Film Archive

San Luca - Bologna

Monday the 26th of June 2017 - in the morning we reach Basilica di San Luca with private transfer. We slowly walk back to Bologna under the astonishing portici and, in the afternoon, we will meet one of the most important festival guests.

In the evening in Piazza Maggiore we will enjoy one of the greatest classics of silent cinema of all times: Sergej M. Ėjzenštejn 's Battleship Potëmkin' (1925) with live music performed by the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna conducted by Helmut Imig, and preceded by the world premiere of the first 15 restored minutes of 'La Roue' (1923) by Abel Gance.

Day 6 - Modena

Tuesday the 27th of June 2017 - after breakfast we leave early with private transfer to Modena where we start our visit with a guided walk in the town centre followed by a visit to Fondazione Fotografia Modena; we are then ready to start our Pavarotti & Ferrari special tour to get familiar with two Italian and international legends. We can sing opera songs and admire an astonishing variety of some of the most beautiful cars ever built. Does anybody dare to experience a ride on an amazing driving simulator?

We return to Bologna just in time for a light dinner and the festival night film.

Day 7 - Bologna Museums

Wednesday the 28th of June 2017 - we dedicate the whole morning to a guided tour of Palazzo Poggi – Museo della Specola to admire Bologna from a very special viewpoint foloed by the Museo della Storia di Bologna. Light lunch. In the afternoon we visit Collezione Tagliavini at the Abbazia di San Colombano to admire antique and old musical instruments. We follow on to Museo Medievale and Chiesa di San Pietro.

You have some time at your leisure before we have dinner and fllow on to open air night cinema in the Piazza.

Day 8 - Ferrara


Thursday the 29th of June 2017 - after an early breakfast we leave with private transfer to Ferarra where we are guided to specific cinema locations from movies by Antonioni, Visconti, De Sica and Wim Wenders including: Castello Estense, Palazzo Ducale, Abbazia di Sant’Antonio, tour of the city walls.

After lunch at the Enoteca al Brindisi, a XIV century wine bar (the oldest one in the world, listed also in the guinness of world records) in the afteroon wecontinue our cinema related tour visiting Palazzo dei Diamanti, the local sinagogue, the Cathedral, Biblioteca Ariostea, Palazzina della Marfisa d’Este, Palazzo Schifanoia and the Jewish Cementery.

Dinner takes place in the special slow food Trattoria in Bologna so taht, if you wish you can still have time for an evening movie.

Day 9 - Italian Cooking!

Friday the 30th of June 2017 -  in the morning we visit the touching Museo della Memoria di Ustica and then, with private transfer, we reach the monumental cemetery Certosa di Bologna.

To learn more on our culinary traditions today we experience a sweet afternoon visiting the Carpigiani icecream museum with a final tasting of fantastic italian gelato.

After a light yummy dinner a new film in the Piazza is waiting for us: 'Steamboat Bill Jr.' (1927) diected andstarring the silent cinema true geniusBuster Keaton, with music written and diected by Maestro Timothy Brock and preformed live by the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

Day 10 - Bologna

Saturday the 1st of July 2017 - Bologna: our last day focuses on the Seicento bolognese with a visit to the Basilica di San Petronio and the Teatro Anatomico. Lunch at the Mercato Ritrovato. Before you start packing your suitcase up to return home there is some leisure time for specialized shopping and, in the evening, the festival closing ceremony with the screening in Piazza Maggioreof the 70's cult movie'Saturday Night Fever' (1977),  director's cutversion in the presence of the film director John Badham!

Day 11 - Back home

Sunday the 2nd of July 2017 - after breakfast, it is time to say "arrivederci" and a private transfer drives you to the airport for departure.

We are sure that after 10 days you will feel as if you were born in Bologna and we hope that you will say, like Humphrey Bogart in the end of Casablanca (1940) "... Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

All meals on board of your flight. If flying to overseas: night flight with arrival back to your country on the 3rd of July.

Your travel price may decrease due to:

  • Airline Promotions
  • Favorable exchange rate
  • sharing excursions and itineraries with other travelers on the same dates

Travel registration fee and mandatory medical/luggage insurance fee: €40 adult (non-refundable) That includes:

  • Repatriation to your country for hospitalization or serious family problems
  • Coverage of costs for purchase of first need personal effects in case of delayed baggage delivery
